i'm katie in for terry mcsweeney on this saturday morning. we will kick you off with a quick first look at the weather. here's meteorologist lisa argen. good morning. >> good morning. you see plenty of clouds out there on the roof cam. the building is lit up and locking festive. we are looking at live doppler 7 hd, which is also indicating some lighter rain showers here over into the east bay. alameda, san leandro and oakland up through berkeley and west toward daly city. a few light showers in the city through the san ramon valley and dublin. also hayward and union city, down through castro valley, 280. redwood city. as you head further south from sunnyvale down through cupertino, some very light rain showers. this will be the order of the day. the on and off light rain showers. santa cruz mountains, los gatos. into the afternoon light rain to just dry skies until later on. and that's when the last very strong system comes our way with heavy rain, gusty winds and the

potential for flooding. katie. >> thank you, lisa. >> flood warnings are in effect for sonoma county as the water levels in several rivers and creeks continue to rise. we are live in petaluma where willowbrook creek is a good example. k. he ra. >> katie, two days ago willowbrook creek was completely empty. yesterday it filled almost to its limit. it's happening all over sonoma county. rivers and creeks filling either to their limits or unfortunately in some cases over their limits. one man tells us he watched the banks of the russian river rise to 17 feet yesterday. he was packing his belongings. this morning he's planning to head for higher ground. >> i think it will be up to here because the flood stage or the expectations at gurnville is 32 feet. >> flood signs popped up across highways and low lying back

roads. some drivers ignored those warning signs, you can see, and tried to cross anyway with no luck. a windsor resident said he pulled three cars out of a flooded part of the road. the russian river, meanwhile, is expected to reach its capacity, but not surpass that throughout this weekend. but residents we've spoken with say they are focused on tomorrow. both their preparations and concerns for tomorrow's storm. reporting live in petaluma, abc7 news. >> and we see she has taken off her hood in the last half-hour so a break for folks in petaluma right now. people in the santa cruz mountains not getting a break. they are still without power and highway 9 is still shut down because of downed power lines. we have more from santa cruz county. >> pg&e crews are working to get power restored. this has been cut away by power

crews and up the road only one building has electricity. >> you try to get ahead of the ballgame. a lot of us have small generators around here. >> his generator is humming along at his general store but some of his neighbors are having to settle with tiki lamps and candles to get through the night and the trouble caused by the storm. >> this is our first one of the year. usually they don't hit until around january or february but this time it caught us a little early. >> this highway has been shut down. plenty of drivers had to turn around and find alternate routes. >> i'm going to find a little road that loops around. i'm going to go to a friend's bridal shower. >> three teams are working on restoring power to the area. meanwhile the rain continues to come in waves. and even with the power out, residents say it could be a whole lot worse. >> this town has had its warm storm. the worst time is when it's cold and dreary, it's cold and you can't warm up and we are around 60 degrees so it's not too bad. >> pg&e crews hoped to have the

power line repaired and highway 9 reopened by about 9:00 in the morning, but they have had to push that. now they are hoping to have it open around 11:00 in the morning. in santa cruz county, abc7 news. >> still several hours to go for them. the wet weather has created problems all over the bay. in san francisco yesterday, take a look at this. a huge trees toppled on to a mercedes along pine street in lower pacific heights. luckily no one was hurt but the mess sure did shut down a major town artery for a short time. fallen trees and downed power lines kept crews business in marin county, as well. flood be submerged this poring lot. and a ten was knocked down in a christmas tree lot near mill valley. and other work crews were kept busy. and one official told abc7 news you can often blame needing like

this on either leaves or litter clogging up the. a spinout on wet roads in antioch damaged three cars and sent a child and adult to the hospital. it happened early yesterday afternoon on highway 4. the chp cannot confirm initial reports the child was actually ejected from the car, but we know the three-year-old boy was airlifted to children's hospital in oakland. the adult was taken to a hospital in brentwood. >> in other news a san francisco elementary school is working to try to stop the spread of a gastroenteritis outbreak. dozens of kids have become sick at fairmont elementary school in the glen park neighborhood. abc7 news tells us what is being done about it. >> the number of students are absent or become ill at school with gastroenteritis. >> he reads from a letter sent home with children to their parents. it includes vomiting, diarrhea, nausea and or stomach cramps. >> she knew something was going

around, but she wasn't notified. >> i heard yesterday about 28 kids were out. >> her son was sick last week. >> the day before thanksgiving he was fine, and then on thanksgiving he woke up really sick from his stomach. he wasn't able to eat any turkey or any of that. >> an administrator with the school told me nearly 150 students and some faculty members stayed home. the aftercare program ran as scheduled, but with precaution. >> we were given masks because 150 children are sick so we want to help them as much as we can but we also want to protect ourselves at the same time. >> some of the students may have been kept home as a precaution. the health department is advising fairmont how to sanitize the campus over the weekend. they also scent inspectors. the school administrator told us the lunchtime was, in her words, up to par.

school is expected to go on as usual on monday morning but parents are urged to keep their kids home if they have any symptoms of the virus. in san francisco, abc7 news. new this morning, today is world a.i.d.s. day. several groups are offering free hiv testing. contra costa county health services and the the community center are sponsoring events to commemorate this day. from 11 to two, free hiv tests and counseling will be offered at the delta bay church of christ on railroad avenue in pittsburgh and at 8:00 tonight in concord a candle light vigil will take place at the park. county health officials say the most recent census figures show the number of people living with a.i.d.s. was up in 2011 compared with four years earlier. coming up next, tensions are escalating again between north and south korea. what is being planned days ahead of south korea's presidential election. and a tourist is attacked by a shark while snorkeling in hawaii. hawaii. how he k you need to goounter. think you need to go to a department store counter

also through oakland, alameda, highway 13. down through an leandro. also to the north up through he will sir receipt toe, and a heavier shower here. and all these showers very light. i think they will be more concentrated this morning and a better break this afternoon. los gatos, and highway 101, some shower activity. we will get into the little break but a flash flood watch remains in effect through tomorrow night for the north bay. san francisco, the peninsula, santa cruz mountains and monterey bay. we are expecting several inches of rain in addition to what we received with the last and final system coming through late tonight into tomorrow with gusty winds. katie. >> pretty dramatic stuff. thank you, lisa. new this morning north korea said it will try again to launch a long range rocket, one capable of reaching northern california. they said the launch will take

place sometime between 22nd. it comes as their leader meets to chinese officials to discuss relations. it also comes ahead of south korea's december 19th presidential election. the north launched a long range rocket in april but it broke apart shortly after liftoff. they say they have made improvements. >> and there was a change ever hands of mexico's authorities. president elect enrique peno nieto was given the flag in front of the guard of honor and the new cabinet. en mean neat will officially be sworn into office later today. he's a member of the revolutionary party which ruled mexico for seven decades until losing power amidst scandal in 2000. he proms to govern democratically and with transparency. an oregon man is recovering from a shark attack in hawaii."

while authorities are trying to decide whether to reopen about two miles of beach. he was snorkeling on maui when the shark attacked him about 200 yards offshore. thomas kennedy suffered cuts on his leg and thigh and was rescued by hive -- lifeguards. he told state biologists the shark's head was about two feet wide. >> he estimated the sides of the head, color rags and the shape, and i'm certainly not an expert, but perhaps it was a tiger shark. >> the attack occurred near the central resort on the south side of maui. >> here's photos from the storms coming through. this is a tree that fell on a house. that's unfortunate. this is a beautiful picture of a rainbow over the golden gate bridge. e-mail your weather photos to us at ureport atkins kgo-tv.com.

>> good morning, it's 6:17 and we are on storm watch as lotiona tells us the worst is yet to come. how could that be? >> like you said, we have two behind us and one to go. the rivers and streams have been doing relatively well. we've had some minor flooding but this last one bringing us several more inches of rain. as we head outside, lake tahoe, you have to get high up to get the snow. it's been wet snow. the tahoe valley airport, it's 42 degrees and light rain being report the back home. the golden gate bridge. well, you can see all the wet pavement there. there is fog from napa to oakland to sfo this morning. and the rain extends light rain

from here over to the delta. a look at live doppler 7hd. further south we are looking at light rain and to the east bay, berkeley, and through sycamore valley, the san ramon valley, emeryville and down through redwood road, light returns. the dumbarton bridge and also the san mateo bridge. you can see 92, wet weather there through 280 and the santa cruz mountains from ben loamen down to morgan hill. we are getting into the little break this afternoon but the national weather service since yesterday has issued a flash flood watch through tomorrow evening for several inches of rain for the north bay smaller streams may overtop their banks, the peninsula, san francisco and some of the storm drains will be overwhelmed in the santa cruz mountains. we have the moist subtropical throw continuing.

we have a trough and with so much moisture in the air we will ring out some showers from time to time this morning. 67 in redwood city. fairfield, 67 for you. breezy winds gust to 25 miles an hour from half moon bay. oakland 30 american gusts. hayward up to 33 americans. showers on and off throughout the day today. heavy rain and wind arriving tonight through tomorrow morning. and the flood warning for the rivers of the north bay from napa, gurnville, hoplin and we are looking at the high surf advisory issued through 10:00 this morning extended for 10 to 15-foot swells through tomorrow evening. this trough enhancing all that moisture, allowing for some of those showers from time to time. but it's what is behind it that is slated to bring in pretty heavy rain. winds up to 20 and 30 americans to the evening hours. here's the timeline. you see the shower activity, 7:00 this morning. then it really begins to taper

off. right on through 3:00, 4:00, 6:00 more showers. but it's 11:00 it's hung up in the sonoma area. but all through the night it sinks south. 1:00 tomorrow morning. heavy rain, 11:00 the north bay is behind it. the rest of sunday not looking too bad for that raiders game. but early on if you are tailgating you will get into the wet weather. 2.5 to 5 inches of additional rain through 11:00 tomorrow. up in the north bay, that's where we are worried about the rivers reaching flood staining through monday morning. one to two inches in the south bay. peninsula inch and a half to three inches. 67 mild degrees in oakland with the on and off showers. 65 san jose with mid-60s here. right now it's dry. so today should be a day where you can still kind of prepare, get out and do things tonight, tomorrow. the heavy rain and then it's out of here for much of the day monday. a good deal of dry weather coming our way after this next

as you cross the golden gate bridge southward or up to the north. a little cell offshore. and then over to the bay bridge and into the livermore valley and dublin. it's wet out there from hayward, further south union city you are dry now but you had a shower. and on the peninsula to the santa cruz mountains from los gatos looking at some wet weather. alpine road, ben lomen and morgan hill. the last system is a strong one. it's moving our way but we are looking at a bit of a break today. winds are breezy out there right now and a flash flood watch is in effect through tomorrow evening for these counties here, as we anticipate some smaller stroams may be overtopping their banks. katie. >> all right, lisa, thank you. as you mentioned, flood warnings are in effect in for the napa river and further south we are talking about flood watches as the rivers continue to rise.

we have kera live in petaluma. good morning. >> good morning. just within the last few minutes it started raining ever so slightly here in petaluma. nothing like we saw yesterday. the rains yesterday caldwell low brook creek to go from empty to nearly full. and it was happening all over sonoma county, as you just mentioned napa county a problem as well. one man whose trailer sits right on the banks of the russian river told abc7 news he watched the river rise 17 feet. flood signs popped up across highways and low lying back roads. some drivers ignored the warning signs and tried to cross anyway with no luck. >> we were coming from windsor. we were going to santa rosa to the mall and then we took the back roads up to santa rosa. once we got like to the water, you could see the car, just like smoke started coming out and aaron tried to turn the car off and turn it back on. didn't work. and then so we opened the doors and all the water just came in. >> everybody thinks they can come through it, and they don't

make it. >> they really don't. time and again a windsor resident told he pulled three cars out of the flooded part of the road. and also flooding closed route 12 and highway 121. this morning i read a funny but true tweet, telling their followers to avoid that intersection unless you are driving a boat. probably good words to live by for the next few days. reporting live, abc7 news. >> excellent advice. thank you. the california emergency management agency also has advice. as the storms come and go, it's a good reminder to be ready for the rainy season or any type of natural hazard. we are all encouraged to have emergency kits stocked with items, including batteries, flashlights and radios. and extra batteries, a three-day supply of food and water for everyone in the family and a manual can opener.

prepare for stocking your emergency kits and developing an emergency plan for your family are posted on abc7news.com under "see it on tv." in the sierra the truckee river is forecast to overflow it's banks near truckee and reno early tomorrow morning. a state of emergency is declared for douglas county. crews in reno are already filling sandbags this an industrial section of sparks that could be under four feet of water by 7:00 tomorrow night. the truckee river is expected to reach four feet above flood stage from highway 395 in reno through sparks. and in california the river is predicted to flood between squaw creek and the town of truckee. they warn there is potential for major damage to roads, homes and bridges by late tomorrow morning. rain in the bay area usually means snow in the sierra and some resorts plan on being open this weekend. kirkland provided these pictures showing what it looks like at the bottom of the slopes. kirkwood, heavenly and northstar

all plan to be open today. idol ski lifts at sugar bowl right now. they will be closed today because of high winds. squaw valley and alpine meadows report high winds might keep them from opening today, as well. this morning two men are in custody and charged with plotting to help terrorists plot a strike against americans. they are brothers and naturalized citizens living in south florida. they tell us they were part of a weapon to obtain weapons of mass destruction. >> tonight two men are in custody accusing are plotting to bomb the homeland. they are identified at naturalized citizens from pakistan. sources tell abc7 news this was not a sting and the younger brother had been in contact with overseas radicals possibly connected to al-qaeda. they are accused of providing lodging, communication and transportation in a conspiracy to use a weapon of mass destruction. and the fbi found residents the

-- etched the younger brother had been monitoring recent fbi sting cases. where they say infiltrating the conspiracy was a non-starter. >> a 17-year-old boy is san jose's 33rd homicide of the year. he was found shot to death last night near pacific and lincoln avenues. they suspect the murder may have been gang related but they have not released any suspect information. on tuesday, contra costa county supervisors are expected to close four fire stations in the contra costa fire district starting in january. the cost-cutting move comes after county voters rejected measure q, a temporary partial task to preserve existing levels of fire service. the fire chief selected stations for closer in walnut creek, clayton, and lafayette and martinez. lafayette city manager is urging residents to attend the meeting to voice opposition.

>> the man who wrote the best selling book "the kite runner," he lives in the bay area and he's asking for help for homeless afghanistan refugees. he's encouraging people to learn about people who lived in a country much different than america but have the same hopes and dreams. cheryl jennings has our story. ♪ >> you are looking at video of afghanistan where the author was born. these images are from the foundation's website. he lives in san jose now and he's internationally known for his best-selling book set in afghanistan "the kite runner" and" the thousand splendid sons." he spends his free time raising

money to build shelters like this for homeless families in afghanistan and to provide educational opportunities and healthcare for women and children. the need is overwhelming after 30 years of war. >> a lot of times people are left homeless without jobs, without food, access to clean water, education, healthcare. >> some resort to living underground to stay alive. >> there would be anywhere from 15 to 25 people essentially living in these holes that have one opening at the very top as a window and they were living there for two, three, three and a half months. winter in afghanistan in many parts of the country is brutal. freezing temperatures and routinely i would go to villages and see the elders complain about the sick and the elderly and the children that they were losing every winter due to the cold. this is one of the reason for building the shelters that cost $2,000 for a family of six or seven people. for a small amount of money it

can be a life saving culture. >> families get a prepackaged kit and build the shelter themselves. >> they are given the raw materials and given the window frames, the doors, the beams. >> so far this foundation has raised enough money to build nearly 400 shelters to house 2300 people. his wife is helping afghan women who remain in refugee camps in pakistan with to make jewelry through a nonprofit. >> all the income generated by the sale of these items is reinvested in the lives of those women in helping with food, jobs and medicine. >> the doctor is tapping into his young fan base to help in his mission. >> i have so many letters from high school students saying that i would like to do something for afghanistan. i would like to do something for kids just like me in afghanistan. >> he designed a program called s. o. s., student outreach for shelter. >> all these students are reading my books in their

classroom, but there's a service learning component and a curriculum where students can partner with us and raise funds to build shelters for returning refugees in afghanistan. >> i'm going to be fundraising and helping out with this organization in any way that i can. >> he attends the harper school in san jose. he's passionate about his new fundraising drive on campus to help homeless afghans. >> i feel it's unfair to them because they have worked so hard to establish themselves and all of a sudden a war happens and they are pulled out. >> he said he is hoping a lot more young people want to get involved with his foundation and help homeless afghan families. when they do, it will be a real live history lesson. >> i hope that this really works and i hope that we can change people's lives, and i hope that we have a big part in rebuilding afghanistan. >> cheryl jennings, abc7 news. leaders in san mateo county are hoping people will help stuff the bus with toys today to benefit the san mateo county children's fund. the stuff the bus toy drive actually involves two buss and a

fire truck all making stops today. the first opportunity will be at 8:00 this morning at buck's restaurant on woodside road in woodside. that bus will also make stops in half moon bay and san mateo. the fire truck starts out at 9:00 on laurel street in san carlos. it will also stop at kohl's plaza this afternoon. that's on walnut street. and bus two in daily center city shopping center food court at 11:00 a.m. hopefully you will cross paths with one of the buses or the fire truck and kickoff the holiday season. >> that's right. >> as the storm kicks off its last phase, at least? >> that's right. i was looking at some of these areas in nevada. they have high-elevation snow but gusty winds there. back home freezing. winds outs of the southeast at 30 miles an hour. here's a look from the roof camera. on and off light rain showers through the morning and the afternoon.
